He attended Iowa State University, majored in philosophy, and graduated with distinction in 1976, having been awarded memberships in both Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He then taught for a year back at Iowa State before being awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Florida. He has been invited to spend six weeks this summer at the Center for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at Australian National University in Canberra, Australia.
